Modern or Contemporary? Two Different Styles

It’s a common misconception that modern and contemporary are the same design style, but there are some significant differences that separate the two.
Often times, people hear modern and think the style must be whatever is trending presently but that is not the case. Modern design specifically refers to a specific era, between the early to mid-twentieth century. Modern design is characterized by: clean straight lines, a minimalist kind of “less is more” approach, bold accent colors such as black and white, or primary colors used as accents to break up neutrals. Think Ikea. Another strong element in modern design is the use of metals. With modern you see stainless steel and chrome finishes but wouldn’t see wrought iron or rub-oiled bronze. Here are a few examples of modern.

Contemporary design on the other hand refers to present day trending styles. Therefore, it’s more fluid and constantly changing. Examples of trending contemporary designs at the moment are: floral prints in wall paper and fabrics, flat roofs, expansive windows, straight lines, mixing materials and patterns as well as bold pops of saturated colors and natural wood finishes.
